Broken Age’s second act now aiming for early 2015 launch

Broken Age Act 2, originally expected to launch by the end of this year, will instead release “early next year,” the game’s producer wrote this week on Broken Age’s official forums.

“The goal now is to get all the finale work done so we can hit Alpha on all of Act 2 by the end of the year,” wrote Greg Rice of Double Fine Productions. “That means, as you may have guessed based on recent updates and documentary episodes, the Act 2 ship that will deliver the complete adventure is now looking like it will be early next year.

“The game is looking really good and the team is working super fast, but we just gotta give the game the time it needs to really deliver on everything we’re hoping it will be,” he added.

Playtests of Broken Age Act 2 are coming in at 8 to 12 hours, Rice says, which would be substantially longer than Act 1, which launched in January.

In October, creator and Double Fine founder Tim Schafer said he had finished writing the second act, clearing the way for voice acting and other work to finish the game.

Broken Age, then an unnamed adventure game, was the second Kickstarter project to raise more than $1 million when it was offered to backers in February 2012. It ultimately raised $3.3 million. Originally promised for an October 2012 delivery, Broken Age was delayed to September 2013 and then, in July 2013, Schafer split it into two acts in order to get something published by January of this year. Broken Age Act 2 will complete the game. Backers and buyers of Act 1 will get Act 2 for free.

Broken Age Act 1 reviewed very well; Polygon scored it a 9.

Ten days ago Double Fine said it had to cancel an unannounced project after a publishing deal fell apart, leading to the dismissal of 12 staffers. The layoffs will not disrupt Broken Age, Schafer said.
